The Grand River at the Chiefswood Road bridge, on the edge of Brant County

Brant County

The County of Brant wraps around Brantford on every side. It is where you go for a heritage town on the river, a village where people still wave from the porch, or a few acres with room for a shop and a garden. Several of our agents live out here and know the back roads well.

What are the towns and villages in Brant County?

Paris is the heart of the county, a heritage town where the Nith River meets the Grand. North of Brantford, St. George is a friendly village known for its Main Street and fall AppleFest. West of the city, Burford is a farm-country village with a long-running fall fair.

Further south-west are the small communities of Oakland and Scotland, with rural lots and a quiet pace. Just south of the city, Mount Pleasant and the countryside of the former Brantford Township give you village life ten minutes from city shopping.

Who does Brant County suit?

Families who want a smaller-town school and a bigger yard, commuters heading to Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo or Hamilton, and anyone who has always wanted a few acres. It also draws downsizers who want to stay close to Brantford's hospital and shopping without living in the city.

The trade-off is distance from some services and, on rural properties, the responsibility of a well and septic system. We walk every rural buyer through those checks; our well and septic guide is a good place to start.

What is there to do outdoors?

The Grand River is the big draw: paddling between Paris and Brantford is a local rite of summer, and the river valley is lined with trails. The SC Johnson Trail links Paris and Brantford, and the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail follows the river north. Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area, north of Paris, has a beach and campground.

Village life fills the calendar too, from fall fairs and AppleFest to farmers' markets and church suppers. It is the kind of place where you get to know your neighbours whether you planned to or not.

    Questions

    Brant County questions, answered

    Ask us something else

Is Brant County the same as Brantford?

No. Brantford is a separate city with its own council and services. The County of Brant is the municipality that surrounds it and includes Paris, St. George, Burford, Scotland, Oakland, Mount Pleasant and rural areas. Property taxes, garbage pickup, water and bylaws are set by whichever municipality the home is in, so it is worth confirming before you buy.

Where is the best place to live in Brant County?

It depends on what you need. Paris has the most amenities, a heritage downtown and quick access to Highway 403. St. George suits people who want a true village close to Cambridge and Hamilton. Burford, Scotland and Oakland offer more space and a rural pace. Mount Pleasant gives you village life just minutes from Brantford.

Do homes in Brant County have well and septic?

Many rural homes do. Paris, St. George and some village areas have municipal water and sewer, while farms, acreages and many hamlet homes rely on a private well and septic system. Before you firm up an offer, we recommend water potability and flow testing and a septic inspection, and we can help you build those conditions into your offer.

Is Brant County good for commuting?

Yes, for most of the county. Paris sits right on Highway 403, about 30 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo and about 40 minutes from Hamilton. St. George is close to Cambridge and Highway 401. Burford, Oakland and Scotland add some country driving, but Brantford is usually 15 to 20 minutes away.

Are there rentals in Brant County?

There are, but far fewer than in Brantford, and they tend to be houses or units in older village homes rather than apartment buildings. Good rentals in Paris and St. George move quickly. See homes for rent in Brant County and set up a search so you hear about new ones as soon as they are listed.
