The steel trestle of the old railway bridge above the trees in Delhi, Ontario

Delhi

Delhi is a friendly farm town in western Norfolk County, at the crossroads of Highway 3 and Highway 59. Once the centre of Ontario's tobacco belt, it is now surrounded by a mix of crops and orchards and is home to a proud, multicultural community.

What is Delhi known for?

For generations, Delhi was the centre of Ontario's tobacco belt, and Dutch, Portuguese, Ukrainian and Caribbean families, among many others, helped build the farms and the town. That heritage is still visible in the churches, clubs and community events, and in the Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre.

Today the farms around town grow a wide mix of crops, from ginseng and berries to lavender. In town, Quance Park and the trails along Big Creek are the favourite places to walk, and summer events bring the whole community out.

Who does Delhi suit?

Buyers looking for good value in a full-service small town, families who want a local high school, and anyone hoping for acreage or a working farm. It is also a practical base for people who work in agriculture or in Simcoe and Tillsonburg.

Lake Erie and Port Dover are about 25 minutes away, and Port Rowan and Long Point are a short drive south.

What homes are in Delhi?

Older brick and frame homes on established streets, post-war bungalows, some newer builds, and farms and country homes on larger parcels around town. Farm and acreage buyers should plan for well, septic and outbuilding inspections, and for checking zoning on any agricultural land.

    Where is Delhi, Ontario?

Delhi is in western Norfolk County, where Highway 3 meets Highway 59. Simcoe is about 20 minutes east, Port Dover about 25 minutes, Tillsonburg a short drive west and Brantford about 45 minutes north-east. Long Point and Port Rowan are a short drive south.

Why is Delhi called the heart of tobacco country?

For much of the last century, the sandy soils around Delhi supported Ontario's tobacco industry, and the town grew up around it. Many immigrant families came to work and later own the farms. As tobacco declined, area farms shifted to crops such as ginseng, berries and lavender. The Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre tells the story.

What schools are in Delhi, Ontario?

Delhi Public School serves elementary students, and Delhi District Secondary School covers grades 9 to 12. St. Frances Cabrini offers Catholic elementary education, and Catholic secondary students usually attend Holy Trinity in Simcoe. Confirm boundaries and programs with the school boards for any specific address.

What should I know before buying a farm near Delhi?

Check the zoning and any farm-related restrictions, the condition of the well, septic and outbuildings, soil and drainage, and whether any land is rented to a neighbouring farmer. If you plan to farm, talk to your lender early, since agricultural financing works differently. Our team can help you line up the right professionals.
