A bungalow keeps the kitchen, bedrooms and main bathroom on one floor, which is why so many downsizers, young families and buyers with mobility needs ask for one. Brantford has several styles, and they are not equally step-free, so it pays to know which one you are looking at.

The standard bungalow is the most common: one floor of living space over a full basement, reached by a single staircase. You will see whole streets of them in Eagle Place, the North End and parts of Terrace Hill, many built in the decades after the war. They are simple, solid houses, and plenty of buyers finish the basement as a family room or guest space.
Raised bungalows sit higher, so the lower level has bigger windows and feels like real living space rather than a basement. Bi-levels open onto a landing between floors. Bungalow townhomes, often in adult-oriented developments or newer subdivisions, offer main-floor laundry and an attached garage with no stairs at all. If you want a fully accessible home, a bungalow townhome or a standard bungalow with a level entry is usually the better starting point.
One floor helps, but check the details. Count the steps from the driveway to the door and from the garage into the house. Measure doorway widths and look at the main bathroom: a tub can usually be replaced with a walk-in shower, but a cramped bathroom is harder to fix. Main-floor laundry is a big plus that many older bungalows lack.
If you are planning for a parent or adult child to live with you, a bungalow basement can sometimes become a separate suite. Our guide to accessory suites and multi-generational housing explains what makes a unit legal in Ontario and what it takes to get there.
Bungalows are also common in the villages around the city, often on larger lots. If you want one-floor living with a bigger yard or a quieter street, look at homes for sale in Brant County, especially Mount Pleasant just south of the city. Keep in mind that rural properties may be on a well and septic, which adds a few checks to your purchase.
Inside Brantford, a bungalow keeps you close to hospitals, shopping and transit, which matters more to some buyers every year. Either way, our buying page explains how we help you compare homes and write an offer.
