The railway viaduct and the dam on the Grand River in Paris, Ontario

Paris

Paris is the town people fall for on a Sunday drive. Cobblestone buildings, a downtown built along the river, and trails out the back door. A few of our agents, including Peter Ligori and Matt Comeau, chose to raise their families here.

Why do people move to Paris?

Mostly for the feel of the place. Downtown Paris is built right along the Grand, with shops, cafés and restaurants in old brick and stone buildings, and a riverside walk that is busy with families on any warm evening. Harrowsmith once called it the prettiest little town in Canada, and locals have never let anyone forget it.

It is also practical. Highway 403 is on the edge of town, so Brantford, Kitchener-Waterloo and Hamilton are all within easy reach, and the Willett urgent care centre is in town. That mix of small-town life and real access is why Paris is one of the most asked-about communities on our phones.

What is there to do in Paris?

Get on the river. Paddlers launch in Paris for the run down to Brantford, anglers work the Grand below the dam, and the rail trails start right in town: the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail heads north along the river, and the SC Johnson Trail heads south to Brantford. Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area, a short drive north, has a beach and campground.

In town, there are parks along both rivers, a weekly farmers' market in season, and festivals and events that bring the main street out in force. Read our living in Paris guide for a longer local tour.

What are homes like in Paris?

The older core has Victorian brick homes, worker cottages and the town's famous cobblestone houses, many on hilly streets running down to the rivers. Newer subdivisions on the north and west sides of town offer two-storey family homes, bungalow towns and townhouses with more garage and less maintenance.

Heritage homes here deserve a careful look at wiring, foundations and any heritage designation before you buy. Our Paris listings page covers what to check, and if you already own here, a Paris home evaluation is the place to start.

Questions

Paris questions, answered

Is Paris, Ontario a good place to live?

Paris is one of the most loved towns in the region. It has a walkable heritage downtown on the Grand River, trails for walking and cycling, a high school and several elementary schools, and quick access to Highway 403. People who move here usually stay. The main trade-off is that its popularity means good homes, especially near downtown, tend to draw strong interest.

How far is Paris from Brantford?

About 15 minutes by car. Paris sits north-west of Brantford, and you can drive between them on Highway 403 or on the older Paris Road. Cyclists and walkers can also connect the two on the SC Johnson Trail, which follows the old rail line along the Grand River.

What schools are in Paris, Ontario?

Paris is served by the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. Elementary options include Cobblestone Elementary, Paris Central and North Ward, among others, and Paris District High School covers grades 9 to 12. School boundaries change as the town grows, so we suggest checking the boards' school locator tools for any address.

Can you commute from Paris to Kitchener-Waterloo or Hamilton?

Yes, and many residents do. Kitchener-Waterloo is about 30 minutes away and Hamilton about 40, both mainly on highway. That makes Paris a popular choice for couples who work in different cities. Toronto is a longer drive, so most GTA commuters we work with are on a hybrid schedule.

What should I check when buying a heritage home in Paris?

Ask whether the home is designated or listed on the county's heritage register, since that can affect exterior changes. Then look closely at the electrical system, plumbing, foundation, insulation and any stone or masonry work. A home inspector who knows older homes is worth it. Peter Ligori on our team is a licensed electrician and a great second set of eyes.
